Adventures in Single Parenting

Custody. The word conjures thoughts of ugly court battles, former partners trying to hurt each other, and children being all knotted up in the middle. When my ex and I divorced, we wanted to avoid any chance of that, so we worked out custody issues on our own.

In September 2010, after a trip to the utility department to have his name removed from the bill, we met at a local bookstore and hammered out a plan for who, what, when, and where. We wanted to be fair to each other, but most importantly, we wanted to be fair to our daughter, who was already confused and upset. We wanted to make sure she saw both of us regularly and that we maintained a routine.
